Gramin Vikas Vigyan Samiti (GRAVIS)
Gramin Vikas Vigyan Samiti (GRAVIS) was started in 1983 by Mr. Laxmi Chand Tyagi and Ms. Shashi Tyagi. Through a relentless struggle over the years for community empowerment and rural reconstruction in the Thar desert, GRAVIS has come to occupy a leading position amongst the Voluntary Organisations in Rajasthan with recognition at state and national levels. GRAVIS is involved in literacy programmes, human resource development, health, women's empowerment, water resource development, agriculture and forestry, labour issues and advocacy.
GRAVIS has nine field centers in Johpur district besides autonomous partner organisations in districts of Nagaur, Jaisalmer, Barmar, Bikaner and Sikar. These centers and partner organisations cover 302 villages in six districts. GRAVIS has been working in these villages with a team comprising of 125 full time, 292 part time workers and nearly 500 village volunteers. GRAVIS has a library comprising of over 10,000 books on rural, desert and women's development, and has set-up a 30-bed hospital with round-the-clock services and necessary facilities at Tinwari.
